Falling - Excerpt #4

“Would you like some tea?” Ben asked, walking into the cramped little office.
“No, thanks,” Hayley said.
“What about coffee?” Ben said, pulling turned-over chairs from off a table.
“Not for me,” Raiff said.
“Hot cocoa?” Ben asked.
“I think we’re good,” Hayley said, sitting down.
“Just as well. I don’t have any of them,” Ben said.
“Ha! Then why’d you offer?” Raiff asked.
“Because it’s always nice to have options,” Ben said.

Falling - excerpt #3

Rail travelers became an eccentric, gregarious group with a culture of their own. It was expected that if you rode the rails, you brought baked goods intended for those you were traveling to visit; and half of all you baked was to be shared with your train companions. Passengers who dared tune out their travel mates by putting on earbuds or burying their noses in books without first engaging in lively conversation were heckled playfully and relentlessly. Hobo chic became popular in mainstream fashion. And badges—souvenir pins indicating cities visited by train—made for a steady topic of discussion.

Falling - excerpt #2

Nighttime came, but darkness did not. Meteorologists and cosmologists worked in frenzied bafflement to divine why the sun refused to set. The first theory suggested that the earth’s rotation had ceased, until it was discovered that the same condition applied throughout the globe. A smoky, burnt orange miasma hugged the entire planet, arresting it in a perpetual and oppressive twilight. The next day, same thing. And so the week wore on.

Beta suckers

So I asked a variety of friends to serve as beta readers for my little story project. I especially enjoyed the fact that one of them is a non-reader! So far, so good as one reader confessed to being officially 'hooked' as of page 7.

Sigh.

Really looking forward to seeing how this whole thing plays out. The goal at this point is to send out query letters after the first of the year and -- the fates willing -- manuscripts thereafter.

Falling - excerpt #1

Servers observed a general disregard for calories and trans fats among customers. Comfort food was the order of the day, and fresh-baked goods, especially pies, flew off the shelves before they had time to cool. Games of cards and checkers broke out among those waiting, and neighborhood restaurants quickly evolved into havens of goodwill, storytelling and laughter.
