Nighttime came, but darkness did not. Meteorologists and cosmologists worked in frenzied bafflement to divine why the sun refused to set. The first theory suggested that the earth’s rotation had ceased, until it was discovered that the same condition applied throughout the globe. A smoky, burnt orange miasma hugged the entire planet, arresting it in a perpetual and oppressive twilight. The next day, same thing. And so the week wore on.
